Canadian-born Jessie Tarbox Beals was one of the first female photojournalists. In 1897, she and her husband because itinerant photographers, and by 1901 she was on staff at a newspaper. In 1905 they moved to New York City and Jessie became well-known for capturing the “soul of New York.” Later, she photographed the homes and gardens of New York’s wealthy, and died in poverty at Bellevue in 1942.
