Lucy Parsons was an American labor activist and radical Socialist. She was born in Texas in 1853 but settled in Chicago after she and her husband, Albert (who was executed for his activism after the Haymarket Riot), were forced to flee Texas to avoid persecution for their interracial marriage. Lucy was one of the founders of the Industrial Workers of the World, and in the 1920s was described by the Chicago Police Department as “more dangerous than a thousand rioters.” She died in 1942 in a housefire, and despite working ceaselessly to improve conditions for laborers and to fight against classism, she has been mostly forgotten.
